MAKING GROUND

I spent a year with ceramic artist Elaine Bolt and basket maker Annemarie O'Sullivan at a disused brickworks near Horam in Sussex during their Making Ground collaboration. As the artists harvested willow and clay, I explored the qualities of the raw materials and the intricate choreographies of making, creating a series of movement sequences. These are both screen-based (like the ones below) and paper films: flick books, a triple sequence mutoscope housed in a brick mould and a tuggable loopascope, a series of sequential images attached to a cloth loop animated by pulling over a rod or edge. Lastly, as part of a Making Space residency, we made an interactive installation using a Kinect sensor so that walking towards and away from the screen made the film run forwards or backwards. People's interactions were extraordinarily playful. It was as if they were dancing with the figures in the landscape.
